What can be said about the 4MinX ? in a few words…

It is a DSP based mixer and multi-track recorder from 2 to 8 tracks on a SD/SDHC card. 4MinX has 4 microphone inputs, 2 line inputs (it can handle 2 wireless receivers), 2 AES inputs configurable for AES3 or AES42 to handle digital microphones. The versatile routing allows you to assign each input to one of the 12 available outputs (4 lines, 2 Aux, and 3 AES). For your information, 4MinX is also available in a mixer version without recorder.

Where does the name "4MinX" come from ?

4MinX (pronounced "phorminx") refers to the Greek antiquity where that word meant an ancient lyre famous for playing pure music…

Which kind of production can I do with 4MinX ?

Which kind of production can I do with 4MinX ?

We originally designed 4MinX mainly for TV production, high-quality documentary, TV films, drama series... We’ve noticed that among our users, some sound engineers have started to use 4MinX for movie production. This pushed us into making the product evolve in such direction. 4MinX is also well adapted to other applications like e.g. live music recording or radio production.

How about the power supply and autonomy of 4MinX ?

How about the power supply and autonomy of 4MinX ?

As it is a light-weight and high-performance solution, we have decided to power the 4MinX from a Li-Ion battery (NP-F standard) which you can find on many Sony camcorders (such as Z1 or Z7). This means you can share the batteries with your colleagues from the video. With good battery brands, you can work on site for more than 6 hours and as it is very easy to access, you can quickly remove and replace the battery. 4Minx has also got an external 8-16 VDC power input (HiRose format with 4 pins). In such case, the external power source takes priority with an automatic switchover when the voltage gets too low.

How can I use the line inputs ? Can I connect wireless receivers?

How can I use the line inputs ? Can I connect wireless receivers?

The line inputs have an adjustable trim between -10 and + 4 dBu  (maximum level + 22 dBu) and a flexible routing; they are available on a 5-pin female XLR connector and can be used in 3 different ways :
-As camera return, for monitoring only
-As additional inputs, with a level adjustable via the menu (- 10 to +22) or a potentiometer (- 70 + 22 dB)
-As additional inputs with adjustable input level and mix gain (firmware V1.5 and later). In such case, 2 wireless receivers can be connected by assigning a potentiometer to adjust the mix level.

How can I do multi-channel production with 4MinX ?

How can I do multi-channel production with 4MinX ?

For instance, you can use a double M/S or double A/B microphone set. 4MinX takes into account coupling for such configurations. If you are a SoundField microphone user, you will probably be interested in the SoundField option, which allows to monitor on the headphone sound recording done in A or B format (firmware V1.5 and later). You can select the orientation of your stereophonic listening.

What are the storage media used with 4MinX and what are the backup possibilities ?

What are the storage media used with 4MinX and what are the backup possibilities ?

Recordings are always done on the SD card. We recommend you to use SD or SDHC media of class 10 or similar. Moreover, you can connect an external storage media on the micro-USB 2.0 port and make manual or automatic backups. Then, you have the choice among the following media: USB memory key, any type of memory card via an external card reader, USB or SSD hard drive, etc.
Important: 4MinX also features a larger size USB 1.0 connector, but this interfce is mainly intended to connect a keyboard, helpful for typing text faster than with the virtual keyboard.

Can I use digital microphones with 4MinX ?

Can I use digital microphones with 4MinX ?

Yes, 4MinX is equipped with 2 AES42 inputs which can supply the microphones with a voltage of 10V/250mA in compliance with standards. The gain can be extended from 0dB to 36dB and a mixing potentiometer can be assigned to these microphones. In stereo mode, channels can be connected on the same potentiometer, like with analog sources, and the listening is decoded via the monitoring module both in stereo and in M/S mode.

Can I record 8 different sources on the 4MinX, or am I constrained to a 6+2 configuration ?

Can I record 8 different sources on the 4MinX, or am I constrained to a 6+2 configuration ?

There is no « preset» track assignment inside the unit, all tracks can be freely configured. You can actually record up to 8 different sources.

Can I record separately the stereophonic reduction ?

Can I record separately the stereophonic reduction ?

Yes indeed. You just need to create different files for a recording, like for example a stereo file for the reduction and monophonic files for the various sources.

Can I selectively disable tracks ?

Can I selectively disable tracks ?

Yes, but in order to give more flexibility to the user, the 4MinX approach is here different from the classical multi-tracks. You don't enable a track while recording with a REC READY status, but rather a file which includes one, two or several tracks depending if it is MONO, STEREO or POLY. To sum up, with 4MinX, we enable or disable files, instead of tracks.

Can I record pre-fader ?

Can I record pre-fader ?

Yes, you can record tracks pre-fader and monitor the pre-fader level on the screen, while mixing via the BUS, so that you can provide both a premix and separate components for postproduction.

Can I use the Mixy I/O cable with 4minX ?

Can I use the Mixy I/O cable with 4minX ?

Yes, it is the same Neutrik miniCON connector, its wiring is exactly the same and is 100% compatible.

Is there a quick access to PFL ?

Yes, through the “Solo” function that can be easily assigned to a shortcut key.

How are organized and indexed the audio files ?

How are organized and indexed the audio files ?

The 4MinX organization allows you to create projects and canvases.
Each project includes one or several workdays, and a set of files indexed as scenes and takes. Specifically developed for fictions, the Canvas mode allows you, when activated, to get an auto indexation on 3 levels: film sequences, scenes and takes.

Can I set the recording type and how are the BWF metadata handled ?

Can I set the recording type and how are the BWF metadata handled ?

4Minx manages the metadata included in the BWF standard like Scene, Note, Machine, User and Recording Type. These metadata belong to fields which can be specified. The Recording Type allows you to specify the type of recording : Wild (atmosphere), Time Sync, Pick up, Announce etc… Besides, you can access this information (and other) in a iXml file.

What is iXML ?

What is iXML ?

Currently, the structure of the metadata contained in a BWF file header varies depending on the manufacturer. Therefore, information exchange between devices is complicated, especially between portable multi-track recorders like 4MinX, and audio workstations like e.g. Pro Tools or Pyramix. iXML intends to standardize these metadata in order to make such exchange easier.

How does 4MinX format the storage media and what is the maximum file size ?

How does 4MinX format the storage media and what is the maximum file size ?

The media formatting complies with FAT and FAT32 standards, which limit the file size to 2 GB. But no worry: once this limit is reached, 4MinX automatically goes on recording in a new file.

Can I use the exFAT file format for the SD card?

Can I use the exFAT file format for the SD card?

4MinX does not support the exFAT media format.

If you want to use a new SD card which is pre-formatted with exFAT, we recommend to first re-format it using a computer, e.g. a laptop (its OS does not matter). Select FAT32 instead of exFAT.

Which audio file format does 4MinX use?

With 4MinX, my post-fader tracks sound rather weaker than the pre-fader ones when played in a DAW. Why?

With 4MinX, my post-fader tracks sound rather weaker than the pre-fader ones when played in a DAW. Why?

There are a couple of possible reasons for that:
First, on 4MinX the 0 dB gain for the faders is not at 12:00 but rather at 2:00 (more or less near the fader number 1, 2, 3 or 4). At 12:00 on the fader, the "post" signal is lower than the "pre" signal, which may push you to record it at a higher level.
Besides, depending on your working method, you might be better switching the bargraphs to pre-fader mode on the inputs. You can do this using the menu: Settings>Display settings>Bargraph sources
